Student Representative Council

At Magill School we believe that students have a voice and are able to make a valuable contribution to their school. It is important that students be given the opportunity to express their views on issues of concern to them in the school. It is equally important that they are listened to and encouraged to take an active part in promoting the aims and objectives of the school.

Student voice plays an important part in the day to day proceedings of Magill School. For the last few years Magill has had smaller Student Councils representing each section of the student body so as to: cater for a wider range of student needs, increase student involvement and participation and support students working through democratic processes to bring about change and deal with issues which they deem as important for their school and wider community.

R-2 Student Action Teams

All R- 2 students at Magill School participate in the Student Action Team program.

Through this program young students are given opportunities to participate in doing real and important activities enabling them to make a difference in the school, wider community and globally. In the Early Years young students are practising active citizenship and learning skills for lifelong learning.

Reception students participate in Buddy Group Teams with a focus on getting to know each other and working together as a team.

Other students participate in a process allowing them choice and negotiation in nominating for a team.

  • Teachers facilitate the teams which meet twice a term
  • Student leader R-2 are voted on by their peers as class representatives for a year. There is a boy and a girl leader from each class and a deputy who stands in when leaders are absent.
  • R-2 Student Council meetings are held every two weeks.
  • Some of the projects which Action Teams have worked on include:
  • Planning whole school Casual Days
  • Promoting safe play in the school yard
  • Checking sports equipment for classes
  • Encouraging classes to care for the school environment 
  • Assisting in the school library by shelving books 
  • Learning new games and teaching them to other classmates
  • Promoting recycling
  • Organising and presenting special events such as Children’s Week Celebration
  • Reviewing the school values

Student leaders in the 3-5 Student Council are voted in by their peers as class representatives for a year.  There is a boy and girl leader from each class and a deputy who stands in when leaders are absent.

In the Year 6 Student Council each class has two student representatives who attend Council meetings.

In the Year 7 Student Council each house has four student representatives.

All student leaders are supported and encouraged by their classroom teachers to run regular class meetings/forums where the sharing of ideas and information occurs.  These meetings are opportunities for students to discuss issues or ideas in reference to their community, school or class.

All Student Councils meet fortnightly, these are formal meetings where; the agenda is set, meeting chaired and minutes taken by student leaders with support from a teacher facilitator.  R-7 Councils meet at the same time so the exchanging of ideas and discussion between groups can occur easily when needed.

During the year students on the Councils are offered many opportunities to develop their leadership skills, be it through a formal day of school based leadership training with all students R-7, a visit to Parliament House for the children in R-5 and Sports Day.

Student leaders also work closely with other students, staff and community members to:

  • Devise plans to ensure resources & space are shared equitably
  • Organise and promote fundraising events
  • Initiate activities to celebrate ‘special’ days-such as Harmony Day, Buddy Day and Reconciliation Week
  • Survey students to gain ideas for future resources and equipment 
  • Work with leadership to improve yard and behavioural issues  
  • Organise and support peer tutoring/buddy learning activities
  • Ensure that environmental projects-such as recycling are maintained in the school
